Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award Winner Announced

On Thursday 20 February, the winner of the Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award was announced.

This award is presented annually to the author/illustrator of the most distinguished book for children and young adults that authentically reflects the lives and experiences of Mexican Americans in the United States. The award was established in 1995 and was named in honour of Dr. Tomás Rivera, a distinguished alumnus of Texas State University.

The criteria for the award is as follows:

  • The book will be written for children and young adults (0-18 years).
  • The text and illustrations will be of highest quality.
  • The portrayal/representations of Mexican Americans will be accurate and engaging, avoid stereotypes, and reflect rich characterization.
  • The book may be fiction or non- fiction.

This year’s award has been won by Isabel Quintero for the book My Papi Has a Motorcycle (Mi papi tiene una moto), illustrated by Zeke Peña (Kokila).

9780525553410This book, available in both Spanish and English, is described as “a celebration of the love between a father and daughter, and of a vibrant immigrant neighbourhood … With vivid illustrations and text bursting with heart.” You can find out more about the winning book on the publisher’s website.

Isabel Quintero (@isabelinpieces) is a writer from the Inland Empire of Southern California. She is also the daughter of Mexican immigrants. Zeke Peña (@zpvisual) makes comics and illustrations as an accessible way to remix history and explore complex issues. My Papi has a motorcycle is his first children’s book.
